Calakmul. The jewel in the jungle

The ancient Mayan city and the great forest. There in Calakmul lie stones that tell stories of forgotten kings, builders of the largest city of the classic Maya period. Dreams of power and glory hidden in the jungle.

Calakmul, the legendary city, is a spectacular site for its huge extension and for being in the heart of the Biosphere Reserve of the same name, home to countless species of flora and fauna.

Few places gather the magic that offers Calakmul when, from the top of the temple-mountain gaze is lost in the immense forest while the wind whispers ancient secrets....  

Visiting: Archaeological sites of Calakmul and Balamkú.

Pick up: 5:00 am.

Meeting point: Hotel lobby.

Itinerary: 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  1. Meeting in the hotel lobby.
  2. Arrival to the town of Escárcega and time for breakfast.
  3. Transfer to Calakmul. During the access to the archaeological zone, 60 kilometers of the Biosphere Reserve are crossed, depending on luck, it is possible to see local fauna such as ocellated turkeys, oco-pheasants, peccaries, foxes, agoutis, amongst others.
  4. Visit to Calakmul, the ancient capital of the Kaanul dynasty, the most dominant of the Classic period, whose buildings show the majesty and strength that led them to dominate rivals as powerful as Tikal and Palenque. While walking the paths of the ancient city to see the main buildings is possible to access and climb some of them, as Structures I and II, from which the view, simply, has no equal in Mexico: the Mayan sky and a jungle that seems infinite.
  5. Visit to Balamkú, an extraordinary example of Mayan art in stucco in which the ideas about the universe of this extraordinary civilization are summarized.
  6. Time for food in Escárcega or Champotón.
  7. Return to Campeche.
